Bottle Cap Math In Croatia
Each country I have visited in Europe so far has plastic bottles and bottle caps everywhere. This is true in the historic capital city of Croatia. These small, seemingly innocuous pieces of plastic often find their way into the environment, contributing to pollution and posing a threat to wildlife. Amidst this environmental concern creativity and innovation exist in a classroom where math meets sustainability.
Meet Elementary Teacher Ana Skudar::

On a recent visit to Ana Skudar’s classroom in Zagreb, Croatia I had a blast participating in a math lesson that inspired mathematical curiosity and addressed the issue of bottle cap waste in a unique way. Led by a passionate, fun, energetic, and organized teacher, Ana’s lesson proved that mundane bottle caps can be terrific tools for learning while inspiring environmental awareness.
Ana appealed to students’ social concerns while offering a partial solution by using the bottle caps to learn multiplication. This set up excited students to use Ana’s extensive collection of bottle caps in a discovery type math lesson- one where students build their own knowledge through manipulating objects. With groups of students created and bags of two colors of bottle caps given to groups students delved into the concept of repeated addition leading to multiplication. As they arranged and rearranged the bottle caps, they not only grasped mathematical principles but also developed critical thinking skills needed for problem solving.
What made this lesson truly special was its dual purpose. Not only were the students gaining valuable mathematical insights, but they were also contributing to a meaningful cause—cleaning up bottle caps from the environment. The teacher encouraged students to collect bottle caps from their surroundings, offering that a cleanup activity can be a hands-on learning experience with real-world implications.
But the impact didn’t stop there. The collected bottle caps weren’t simply discarded; instead, they were repurposed for a charitable cause. Through a partnership with a local organization, the bottle caps were recycled and transformed into useful items, such as benches or playground equipment, benefiting the community while reducing plastic waste.
This innovative approach to education highlights the power of creativity and resourcefulness in addressing complex issues like environmental sustainability. By integrating real-world challenges into the curriculum, educators can inspire students to become active agents of change, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy towards the environment.
